Puppy Training Principles Podcast
Episode 20: Learning to Speak “Dog”
Communication is a two way street. Your dog is going to learn some English, but we need to teach them in a way that they understand. “Pressure and Release” is a form of communication that dogs understand really well. It is one of the most effective tools in your belt, and will help you know how to have clear communication between you and your dog.
1:10 – Space, not in a sense of astronauts but rather the space that a dog is given and how it is perceived by them.
2:00 – Dogs can be like teenagers, give push back to pressure. Pressure can be a great motivator in both teenagers and dogs.
6:18 – A reward isn’t always food. Relieving “Proximal Pressure” can tell your dog what is and is not ok.
8:44- The number one mistake in bringing puppies home is giving too much responsibility. To us, it may look like freedom and free roam of the house. To them, it looks like responsibility they may not be ready for.
11:01- Managing responsibility with puppies, not too much not too little.
12:45- A part of communication is not overwhelming them with information. Show your puppy what you need from them in a small space and expand. Utilizing kennels helps responsibility to be earned at appropriate rates. Start small and expand!
